More detail on this person: Brig. Gen. Lloyd Smith Jr. Obituaries Chattanooga Times Free Press (TN) - Wednesday, March 9, 2005 Brig. Gen. Lloyd W. "Smitty" Smith Jr., 72, of Signal Mountain, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2005, at a local hospital. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from basic school in January 1955. He received naval aviator wings in Pensacola, Fla., in October 1959 and graduated from amphibious warfare school in February 1966. He served two tours in Vietnam as a combat pilot in helicopter gunships and flew 442 missions. He graduated from the Air War College with distinction in 1971. He received a master's of public administration from Auburn University in June 1972 and taught at the Army War College from 1974 until 1977. He completed the Army War College as an instructor in residence. He served throughout the Far East and Europe and commanded both air and ground units at every level. He was promoted to general officer in April 1981 and retired as the director of intelligence, headquarters U.S. Marine Corps, in June 1985. He received an honorary doctorate from Doane College in Crete, Neb., in May 1986. Personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, 22 Air medals, Navy Commendation Medal with combat v and a gold star in lieu of a second award. He held an active pilot's license until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Lloyd W. Smith Sr., and a son, Lloyd W. Smith III. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Thomas Smith; daughters, Ann Smith Lee and Jan Smith Hightower, all of Signal Mountain; son and daughter-in-law, Banks Thomas and Angela Smith Sr., Dothan, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Sandy Smith Miller, Hebron, Md.; seven grandchildren; sister, Sandra Lynn, Concord, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Signal Mountain Baptist Church with Dr. Daniel Chisholm, the Rev. David Myers and the Rev. Sally Ensley officiating. officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
