More detail on this person: Monte Smith Monte Smith Daily Oklahoman, The (Oklahoma City, OK) - Wednesday, August 6, 2003 SMITH Monte Smith, 56, of Oklahoma City, passed away Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003. He was born Dec. 30, 1946 in Mangum, OK to Parker and Opal Smith. Moving to Oklahoma City during his childhood, he attended Mayfair Elementary and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1965. After studying at Oklahoma State University for two years, he enrolled in the U.S. Army in 1968. He graduated from Officers' Candidate School at Fort Sill in the top ten per cent of his class. His distinguished service to his country as an accomplished helicopter pilot took him to Germany and Korea as well as other assignments, eventually retiring at the rank of Captain in 1973. During his overseas tenure, he met and married Gina Della Schiava, a native of Italy, in 1971. Three years later Monte and Gina moved back to Oklahoma City. In 1971 their first son Michael was born. Monte worked as a distributor of beauty products and helped manage a motel. Monte and Gina's second son Anthony, was born to the couple in 1979. It was during this time that Monte began his love for computers. He returned to school at UCO and earned a degree in computer science with a minor in business, graduating in 1984. For over 10 years he worked for Norick Data Systems as VP of Research and Development, helping to create software that proved to be highly profitable for the company. In 1994 he started his own consulting company, which led to work for American Banking Systems in 1995. Friends and family alike view Monte as a loving and caring person. He would give his last dime to someone in need. He loved music and reading, and was a man of character beyond reproach. Monte was always upbeat. In the Army his subordinates considered him as much a friend as a ranking officer. He was both an officer and a gentleman. Monte was preceded in death by his father Parker Smith and his brother Tommy Smith. He is survived by his wife Gina, his sons Michael and Anthony, all of Oklahoma City, his mother and stepfather Opal and Paul Reynolds, also of Oklahoma City, as well as numerous family in Italy and the United States. Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Church, 8005 Dorset Drive, Oklahoma City, on Wednesday, August 6 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ the King Church designated for St. Vincent de Paul Charities, Christ the King Building Fund, or the Peru Mission. MERCER-ADAM.
