Samuel Mark Shaw of Ozark passed away on July 6, 2007, at Bill Nichols V.A. Home in Alexander City after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be Thursday at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home at 3 p.m. with Dr. Billy Gaither officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time Thursday. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Resource Center, 1314 Westgate Parkway, Dothan, AL or American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Ozark, AL. Lt. Col. Shaw was born Jan. 3, 1928, in Clinton, Tenn. He joined the Army at an early age and took basic training as World War II was ending. After being discharged, he joined the Tennessee Army National Guard. His unit was activated in 1950 and deployed for service during the Korean Conflict. After returning from Korea, he decided to serve full time in the U.S. Army. He attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., graduating in 1956. He later attended flight school and flew both fixed wing and helicopters. He was a senior pilot. He served in Viet Nam, three tours in Korea, three tours in Germany and several Army posts in the U.S. After retiring he was employed the by Ozark Aviation College as Director of the PREP program at Fort Rucker. Golf was a great love of his and he succeeded in organizing the Gulf States Military Golf Tournaments. He volunteered his time with the American Cancer Relay for Life and other organizations in the area. He served as President of the Retired Officers Association at Fort Rucker. He also served several years as president of the Retired Officers Council of chapter statewide. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Kells Carroll Jr. Sunday school class. Lt. Col. Shaw was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Frances Shaw; three sisters, Mae Weidemann, Ruby Elkins, and Jessie Woods; and five brothers, Eugene, Thomas, Richard, George and Harry. Survivors include his wife Sue Shaw; one son, Samuel N. Shaw; one daughter, Karen Morales and husband Mark Morales; four grandchildren, Shawn G. Beer, Mark E. Beer, Sabrina Nichole Copeland, all of Brandon, Miss., and Margaret Rose Shaw of Purvis, Miss.; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Katie Shaw of Humbolt, Tenn., and Josie Shaw of Murfreesboro, Tenn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
