More detail on this person: Mr Joe Lee Smith, 66 Joe Lee Smith Amarillo Globe-News (TX) - Tuesday, January 1, 2008 ATHENS - Joe Lee Smith, 66, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Cornerstone Baptist Church with Jamie Starkes officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Miami Cemetery by Cooper Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Smith was born June 8, 1941, in Des Moines, N.M., to Olley and Gaudie McLeod Smith. He moved to California at an early age and later moved to Clayton, N.M. On Aug. 16, 1958, at the age of 16, he entered the U.S. Army and served a 21-year career retiring as a Sergeant First Class. He served military occupation in Vietnam and Berlin. Following military retirement, he moved to Arizona and was employed with Arizona Parks and Wildlife. He later moved to the Texas Panhandle and was employed for several years with the Texas Department of Corrections. On March 4, 2006, Joe Smith married Cynthia Ann Wilson, and they made their home in Athens. He was a man who enjoyed people and was known for a great sense of humor. He loved American history and was especially fond of children who affectionately called him "Papa Joe." He loved his Lord and enjoyed served with Christian friends of the Cornerstone Baptist Church of Athens. He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Brigitte Felschne Smith; a wife, Dixie Hines Smith; brothers, George Smith, and Allen Smith and sisters, Vickie Hemphill and Jennie Moon. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Karin Kohler of Winslow, Ariz., Kathy and Doug Liedtke of Amarillo and Charisse Topper of Amarillo; a son, Garrett and wife DeAnn Helton of Guymon, Okla.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 1, 2008
