"Bob" Schimke, 46, of 136 Freeman Road, died Monday in the University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester, after a brief illness. He leaves his wife, Elaine M. (Giles) Schimke; a son, Shane R. Schimke, and a stepson, Matthew P. Gagner of Charlton; a daughter, Cassie E. Schimke of Vermont, a stepdaughter, Tammie E. Gagner of Charlton; his mother, Catherine (Duffy) Martunas of Millbury; and two brothers, Douglas E. Schimke of Mason, N.H., and Paul M. Schimke of Millbury. Mr. Schimke formerly was a quality-control manager at ECC Corp. in Holden. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended schools in Clinton and Kent State University in Ohio for two years. He was a chief warrant officer in the Army for 10 years. He was an evacuation helicopter pilot in Vietnam and was shot down once. He received the National Defense Service Medal; the Army Aviator Badge; the Purple Heart; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; three overseas service stars; the Air Medal; the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, with palm; the Good Conduct Medal and the Senior Army Aviator Badge. He was born in Clinton, a son of Mrs. Martunas and the late Frederick Schimke. He lived in Charlton six years. The funeral will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow with a Mass in St. Joseph's Church, 38 Worcester Road, Charlton City. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Robert J. Miller Funeral Home, Old Worcester Road, is directing the funeral. There are no calling hours. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bob Schimke Memorial Fund, in care of Heritage School, Oxford Road, Charlton, 01507.
