Until the age of 5, he lived in Ash Valley, Kan., where his father was a grain elevator and feed store manager. During World War II, his family moved to Great Bend, Kan., where he graduated from high school in 1955. He attended Kansas State University where he met and married Miss Judith Ann Higgins on Aug. 31, 1958, then graduated in January 1960 with a B.S. in geology. He later earned a master's degree in organizational communications at Shippensburg State College, Pa., in 1982. Engle was commissioned in the U.S. Army and served proudly from March 1960 until February 1986. An artilleryman, a parachutist, and aviator with almost 4,000 accident-free flying hours, he became a master aviator. He flew 13 different fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. He served two combat tours in Vietnam with the 1st Aviation Company (Caribou) in 1963 and with the 205th Assault Support Helicopter Company and 12th Aviation Group in 1967-1968. He received the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters, and Army Commendation Medal. He was a graduate of numerous Army schools and institutions, including the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and Army War College. Engle commanded Army Aviation units at company and battalion level, and served on the Army Staff at the Pentagon. He was commander of Aviation Safety and Standardization of all U.S. Army Europe, inspector general at Fort Rucker, Ala. His final assignment was as aviation officer, 5th U.S. Army, Fort Sam Houston. Following his Army retirement in 1986, Engle joined Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, working as manager of V-22 Training, Government/Military Training, and Tiltrotor Taining. He was responsible for the initial development of the tri-service training program for the V-22 Osprey and formulated long-range training plans for other military and commercial helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft. He retired from Bell in January 2000, and continued to operate his home picture framing business, EWS Enterprises. He spent a lot of time researching his family tree and became the unofficial historian for his extended Scott and Shumate families. He resided in Fort Worth until his death. More than any of his other accomplishments, Engle was most proud of his family, love of God and humankind, honesty, their work ethic, and sense of morality. Survivors: His loving wife, Judy; son, Mike Scott; daughter, Leigh Ann Thompson; daughter-in-law, Sonia Scott; and son-in-law, Jim Thompson.
