More detail on this person: Mr James A Shelton, 78 OBITUARIES (ALL EDITIONS) Press of Atlantic City, The (NJ) - Tuesday, September 15, 1998 SHELTON, JAMES A., 78, of Sea Isle City, a retired Army officer, died Saturday at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital from complications following a stroke. Mr. Shelton, born and raised in Brownfied Texas, attended Texas A & M University under the ROTC program. Following graduation in 1942 he entered the Army where he fought in North Africa and the Italian Theatre during WWII. Mr. Shelton was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in batter. As a career officer, he served overseas during the Korean conflict, qualifying to fly both fixed wing airplanes and helicopters. After serving a tour in Vietnam where he was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star, he retired as a Lt Col in 1967. In 1967, Mr. Shelton went to work for the Boeing Vertol Division in Ridley, Pennsylvania as a Senior Customer Requirements Analyst. Actively involved in the sale of Chinook helicopters to Britain supporting the offshore oil rigs, Mr Shelton was instrumental in determining the specifications still used today by the U.S. Military in modernizing the existing fleet of Chinooks. Mr. Shelton enjoyed cooking and gardening. He was an avid Bridge player and was active in various South Jersey soccer associations. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Judy (Dansberg) Shelton, four sons. Robert J., Michael L. Gregory A., Mark D., and three daughters, B. Virginia, Karen C., and Kimberly A. Vandenberghe. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and two sisters. Betty Russell and Patricia Cocoran, both of Brownsfield Texas. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 24, 1998 at the New Chapel in Fort Myers Virginia, with internment immediately following at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Holy Redeemer Visiting Nurse Agency located at 1801 North Route 9, Swainton, NJ 08210.
