He was born September 22, 1927 in Lansing the son of Robert W. and Hazel L. (Birke) Shields. Jack served 28 years in the Army as a pilot. He also served two Tours of Duty in Vietnam. He was co-owner of Shields & Sons Plumbing for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; 2 children, Kathleen (Tim) Wakefield and Robert W. (fiancee Jill Cook) Shields; 2 grandchildren, Daniel Shields and Jason (Kim O'Brien) Shields; 1 great-grandson, Jacob Shields; 2 nephews, Brian (Lisa) Shields and Eric (Annette) Shields; niece, Carrie (Ray) Belgardt; and sister-in-law, Noreen (David) Steele. He was preceded in death by his brother, George "Mike" Shields. The funeral service will be held 11: 00 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 at Emmanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1001 North Capital, Lansing, with Pastor Paul J. Lindloff officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the Emmanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Hospice Advantage. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
