More detail on this person: Memorial services for retired Lt. Colonel Murrell Langston Sloan are scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 1:30 pm at Burks Walker Tippit in Tyler, Texas. Mitch Shamburger will officiate. Graveside services with full military honors will follow the memorial at Harris Creek Cemetery in Winona.

Murrell passed away peacefully on March 9, 2012 at The Hospice of East Texas with his family at his side and joins his parents, brother and those he loved in God's great kingdom.

He was born in Big Springs, Texas to James Langston and Eula Belle Sloan on May 9, 1937. He is survived by his wife and best friend Shirlee Sloan, his three daughters, Danielle Lauren Sloan, Tammy Lynn Burnett and Tara L. Nowlin, and his sister Patricia Sloan Williams. He is predeceased by his beloved brother Carl. He was blessed with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Murrell proudly served his country in the United States Army rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring in March 1982. He started his career as a pilot and graduated from Officer Candidate School. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Nebraska and an advanced degree from the U.S. Army War College. He bravely served two terms in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot flying his beloved Caribou and led a distinguished career for the military serving under NATO in Oslo, Norway. After retirement he was actively involved with the Army Otter Caribou Association, traveling with his wife to many annual meetings all over the country.

He loved travel, good seafood and flying.

Visitation will be Monday, March 12, 2012 between at 5:30 and 7:00 pm at Burks Walker Tippit. Pallbearers will be Zachary Wheeler, Jonathan Christopher Clements, Jourdan Clements, Randy Nowlin, Nick Nowlin and Royce Lee. Honorary Pallbearers will be Alex Nowlin and Matthew Nowlin.

Donations in his memory can be made to The Hospice of East Texas Foundation, whose staff was kind and loving to Murrell and his family.
