SMETANA Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - Sunday, June 27, 1999 Hans Rainer Anthony Smetana, 53, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton. A native of Gmunden, Austria, he had been a Newport News resident for 18 years. Mr. Smetana retired from the Department of the Army as a supervisory management analyst after 321/2 years of service. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Metal, Army Commendation Medal with 2nd Oak Cluster, Nation Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with V DEV (2 awards), Air Medal (11 awards), Purple Heart, Vietnam Serve Medal, RVN Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Aviator Badge, RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Hans Frederick Smetana and Florence Enis Geraghty Smetana. Survivors include his wife, Celeste Newman Smetana; two sons, Hans Erich Smetana and Karl Anthony Smetana; one sister, Roswitha Smetana Joseph; 11 nieces and nephews, nine grandnieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Sara N. Crosby; three brothers-in-law, Ted G. Joseph, Doug Newman and Mark Newman; and parents-in-law, M. Douglas and Phyllis Ports Newman. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. William L. Vann III, Monday, June 28, at 7 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Palliative Care Unit, 100 Emancipation Drive, Hampton 23669.
