(Ret.), 65, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Ashville, North Carolina, died at Hope House in St. Joseph. He retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1980. Following his retirement, he was engaged in furniture making. He graduated from Benton High School, St. Joseph, and Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Mo. Born, April 2, 1936, in Willowbrook, Missouri. He lived in St. Joseph since June 2001. He had previously lived in Ashville, North Carolina. During the Vietnam War, he served as an aviator with the United States Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul S. Smiley; and a brother, James T. Smiley. Survivors: a daughter, Diana L. Smith of Memphis, Indiana; his mother, Helen M. (Thomas) Smiley, of St. Joseph, Missouri; a sister, Anna Lee Sherry of Irvine, California; and two grandsons. Lt. Col. Smiley will be cremated under the direction of Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service, St. Joseph. There will be no service. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Hope House, 416 N. 7th St., St. Joseph, Mo., 64501.
