Gary Robert Stephan, 28, formerly of Flora, died in a Douglas, Ariz., hospital Sunday morning following an automobile accident. His car reportedly crashed on U.S. 80, 12 miles east of Douglas. Officials said his auto apparently ran off the highway and vaulted an embankment, ejecting him from the car. He died a few hours after the crash. Born Oct. 16, 1947, at Huntington, he was the son of Robert L. and Bonnie Gasaway Stephan. A 1965 graduate of Carroll High School, he attended Purdue University and was attending the University of Arizona while stationed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, he had served in the army since 1969. A member of Flora Presbyterian Church, he served one and a half years in Okinawa, one and a half years in Thailand and one year in combat in Vietnam, where he earned the bronze star and joint service commendation. Surviving with his parents, of Flora, are one brother, Trent, a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (Pa.); a sister, Cythia Lester, Danville, Va.; and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mildred Gasaway of Flora. Friends may call at Carter-Baker Funeral Home from 2:00-9:00 p.m. today (Wednesday). Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Flora Presbyterian Church with Pastor Allen Sager officiating.
