More detail on this person: STRICKLAND, JAMES DONALD, JR. (Age 65) Lt Col. USMC (Ret.), Naval Aviator On Thursday, March 28, 2002 at the VA Hunter Holmes McGuire Hospice in Richmond, VA, from cancer. Colonel Strickland was a 1954 graduate of Abington Senior High School (PA) and attended the Pennsylvania State University from 1954-57. He was commissioned as a Naval Aviator in 1958 and his career in the US Marine Corps spanned over 27 years, highlighted by command of Heavy Marine Helicopter (HMH) Squadron 462 of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in 1974. Colonel Strickland also amassed over 3,000 flight hours during combat service in the Republic of Vietnam, and was the only aviator from his basic flight training class to survive the war. His decorations included two Air Medals for combat flight operations, two Navy Commendation Medals (one with combat "V" device), and the Vietnam Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Colonel Strickland is survived by his wife, Lorraine M.Strickland; mother, Mildred A. Strickland; children, Julie W. Baker, Patricia S. Brown, Andrew C. Strickland, James D. Strickland III, Rexford R. Strickland, Jason E. Weiseman, and Jeffrey R. Weiseman. He was the brother of Patricia S. Claus and Barbara S. Trexler. Colonel Strickland was also a member of Kintai Lodge #16 F&AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oncology Department at VA McGuire Medical Center in Richmond, (804) 675-5446. Interment with Full Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on April 30, 2002.
