Kevin Mason COL(Ret) MC MFS was killed in a
BK-117 during a medical evacuation flight. The
pilot lifted the helicopter to a high hover with a
gusting tail wind at night from a confined space
12th floor helipad in top of University Hospital,
Cleveland, OH. While programming the GPS
receiver, the wind pushed the helicopter towards a
building, alerted by the crew, the pilot attempted
to recover, but veered right clipping a building
tower, and the helicopter fell uncontrolled onto a
parked car near the hospital courtyard below. He
died 18 Jan 2002.
