More detail on this person: While I was in
Pleiku, as an additional duty (my assistant
Platoon Sergeant filled in for me when I was
flying), I flew as Crew Chief and Right Door
Gunner on a CH-47. These aircraft were assigned to
179th Assault Support Helicopter Company. I flew
with Captain Bob Shirey. Bob and I had worked
together in CONUS and we were good friends.
Because of a critical shortage of qualified Door
Gunners at Holloway Army Air Base, Bob asked
me if I would fly with him as his Crew Chief and
Right-Door Gunner. We cleared it with my CO and I
began to fly with him whenever he needed me,
which turned out to be very frequently (several
days a week). As you may recall all of II Corps
was very busy in those days. I was awarded two
Air Medals for the numerous hours I spent flying
with him in combat support operations and
MedEvacs. I only mention that so you'll know my
flight time and missions are all documented. Bob
Died about two years ago of a Massive Heart
Attack. This information was last updated 05/18/2016
