RICHARD LEONARD STOESSNER, 86, passed
away at Warwick Forest, Newport News, on
Sunday morning, March 1, 2015. Born in Cleveland,
Ohio on July 11, 1928, he was the son of the late
Leonard Stoessner and the late Loretta (Wenz)
Stoessner. He leaves behind his wife of 68 years,
Beverly June (Burrer) Stoessner of Newport News.
In addition to his wife, Col. Stoessner is
survived by his son, Mark A. Stoessner and wife,
Donna of Kitty Hawk, NC, his two grandsons,
Christopher J. Stoessner and wife, Melinda of
Kenly, NC, Matthew K. Stoessner and wife, Candis,
and his great-granddaughters, Sara Kirk Stoessner,
and Madisyn Grace Stoessner, all of Kill Devil
Hills, NC. He also leaves his sister, Dorothy
Tyburski of North Royalton, OH, his nieces, Rose
DiCenso and husband, Anthony of Peyton, CO,
Jean Karaffa and husband, Michael, of
Strongsville, OH, Carol Selters and husband, John
of Denver, CO, and his nephew, William Tyburski of
Parma, OH. Col. Stoessner retired from the U.S.
Army upon completion of a 28 year distinguished
career in 1980. He served tours of duty in
Germany, Korea, and two flying tours in Viet Nam
in which the highlight was his participation in
the "Guns-A-Go-Go" Helicopter Aviation Det. Col.
Stoessner was a Master Army Aviator who was
highly decorated and his last duty position was
Assistant Commandant of the U.S. Army
Transportation and Aviation Logistics School, Ft.
Eustis, VA. Following his retirement from the
Army, he joined Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. as their
Representative and Manager in Tidewater, VA. In
addition to Army flight training and graduating
Officer Candidate School in Ft. Benning, GA, Col.
Stoessner's education included a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Business from Hampton
University, a Master's Degree in Communications
from Shippensburg University (PA), and he was a
graduate of the United States Army War College. A
private Memorial Service with full military honors
will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers,
contributions in memory of Col. Richard L.
Stoessner (Ret.) can be made to the U.S. Army
Transportation Museum Foundation, PO Box
