ELLIOTT, Lt Col USMC, passed away January 19,
2013. He was born April 11, 1932 to Vyval Clarence
Short and Louise Elliott Short in Manchester, New
Hampshire. Bob was predeceased by his beloved
wife of fifty-five years, Marlene Coyne Short. He
graduated from Mount Lebanon High School in
Pittsburgh and received his BA degree from St.
Vincent College, Latrobe, PA in 1954. Bob was
commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine
Corps in 1955 and received his wings as a naval
aviator in 1957. During his twenty-six years in
the Marine Corps he flew many aircraft ranging
from single seat jets to multi-engine refueling
transports and helicopters with assignments
progressing from squadron pilot to commanding
officer. He was stationed on both the East and
West coasts, in Hawaii, Japan, and Viet Nam. Bob
was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute
in Monterey, CA where he learned Chinese
Mandarin, the Defense Intelligence School,
Industrial College of the Armed Forces and
Pepperdine University where he earned his MBA in
1975. Bob was awarded the Air Medal with three
stars, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Navy and
Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one star. His
final assignment was Commanding Officer of
Aviation Support Detachment, Headquarters Marine
Corps. After retiring from the Marine Corps Bob
went to work for Fluor Corporation where he was
Manager of Record/Data Management for the
Northwest Alaskan Pipeline project. In 1982 he
joined Northrop Corporation and became the
Manager of Business Operations/Support Systems
for the B-2 program and then continued with the
Anaheim Division until his retirement in 1993.
Bob is survived by his brother, James Laughlin
Short; nieces, nephews, and a cousin; and many
loving friends.
Services will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013
at 11:00 AM at Santiago de Compostela Catholic
Church in Lake Forest, CA. A reception will be
held in the church hall following the service.
