More detail on this person: George Eugene Twiggs, a former resident of Bulloch and Bryan counties, died at the age of 77 years of a massive heart attack on November 23rd, 2014, in a Homestead, Florida, hospital.

Gene was born in Wilmington, N.C., but moved to Toomsboro, Ga., as a child. He attended Toomsboro High School until he joined the Army in 1954. Gene served in the Army until April 1978, flying helicopters for two tours in Vietnam. He commanded the 205 Attack Helicopter Unit at Fort Benning, Ga., and in Germany for three plus years. He then served as airfield commander at Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, Ga.

His enthusiasm for life was contagious.

He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Twiggs; one daughter, Roxann Seaton (Gregg) of Lake Placid, Fla.; a son, George D. Twiggs (Connie) of Lake Placid, Fla.; Roxan and George's mother, Shirley Twiggs, also of Lake Placid, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Lynn M. Byrd (Curtis) of Nevils and Lorrinda Kennedy of Pooler, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two brothers, Jim Twiggs (Debbie) and Fred Twiggs (Marie), both of Biloxi, Miss.; and two sisters, Catherine Cheek of Royston, Ga., and Twila Ashton (Dee) of Farmerville, La. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Lee Twiggs and Hattie Walker Twiggs; two sisters, Barbara Ezelle of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joye Franks of Milledgeville, Ga.; and a brother, Douglas Twiggs of the Philippines.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 30, 2014, from 4-6 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

The funeral service will be Monday, December 1, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Hollie Tapley officiating.

The graveside service, with full military honors, will be at 1 p.m. in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia.
