More detail on this person: James Forrest Thurmond James Forrest Thurmond, 82, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010. Service: Was held at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Entombment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of choice. Jim was born Feb. 26, 1928, in Fort Worth to Amelia Young Thurmond and John Forrest Thurmond. He graduated from Birdville High School and Texas A&M University. Jim married Joyce Beyer on June 26, 1947. He served our nation as a career U.S. Army officer and was assigned to a variety of stateside posts as well as three tours in Germany, two 13-month stints in Vietnam, two three-month assignments in Spain and two three-month assignments in Baghdad. After his retirement, Jim worked several years for the Texas Employment Commission, where he made many good friends. Birdville Baptist Church and Haltom City benefited from his volunteerism. Jim's family and friends were recipients of his love, loyalty and assistance. Although illness and confusion clouded his last years, every day he looked forward to tomorrow with cheerful anticipation. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 56 years; stepbrother, John Thurmond; and stepsisters, Lois Martin and Marcella Houston. Survivors: Children, Cathi and Bob Self, Jimmy Thurmond and Vicki and Zack Amick; grandchildren, Matt Self, Jessica Connally, Rachel Thurmond, Eric Leither and Andrea Amick; and seven great-grandchildren.
