Talcott Rutland Herald (VT) - Wednesday, July 21, 2004 MANCHESTER - Preston Lea Talcott, 63, died July 16, 2004, with esophageal cancer. He was born Jan. 25, 1941, in Orange, N.J., the son of Margaret (Lea) and Thayer Talcott. He attended the Pingry School and graduated from Middlebury College in 1963. While at Middlebury he earned a pilot's license during ROTC training. Mr. Talcott worked for Bloomingdale's in New York for four years and the Orvis Company in Manchester as art and giftware buyer for 27 years. He was as an officer in the U.S. Army, attended infantry school and helicopter flight schools, and served in Vietnam as a pilot in command of a helicopter gunship. He was awarded the Vietnamese Medal of Honor by Prime Minister Ngyuen Co Ky. He was a member of the Manchester Rescue Squad for 15 years and the Dorset Field Club and a board member of Mark Skinner Library. He also was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Mr. Talcott enjoyed traveling, gardening, hunting and water sports. Survivors include his wife of 34 years; two sons, Edward Talcott and Andrew Talcott and a daughter, Alexandra Burns of Medway, Mass.; a brother, Thayer Talcott of Morristown, N.J.; a sister, Carol Ackland of Warren; and a granddaughter. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter, Mark Skinner Library or the Manchester Rescue Squad.
