More detail on this person: Alton "Al" D. Torgerson, 58, Kelso, died Feb. 25, 2001, at home after a 2 1/2 year battle against cancer. He was born May 30, 1942, in Shevlin, Minn., to Bill and Gladys Bolson. Mr. Torgerson lived in Kelso for the last 25 years. He served with in the Army in the 229th Aviation Batallion as an assault helicopter pilot for two tours of duty in Vietnam. After his discharge, he joined the Army Reserve and was active in its teaching program. Mr. Torgerson was a 20-year board member of Residential Resources, an organization for people with special needs. This helped him to care for his daughter, Jeanette Torgerson. He was past president of the Pioneer Lions Club and a member of the American Legion. He coached Little League baseball for more than 20 years and coached his son and grandson. He was a YMCA basketball coach and a board member of the Friends of the Cowlitz County Fair. Mr. Torgerson was a member of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and started the first Bicycle Rodeo with the Kelso-Longview police departments. He was a hero and inspiration to everyone who knew him and he will be missed. The major focus in Mr. Torgerson's life was sharing in the lives of two grandchildren, Haley Martinell and Justin Torgerson, who lived with him. He was father and grandfather to them. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Clark Torgerson, three daughters, Tamara Strickland, Toni Johnson and Jeanette Torgerson; a son, Scot Johnson; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park with the Rev. Dave Galanter officiating. Interment also will be at Longview Memorial Park. Viewing will be held form 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
