More detail on this person: JAMES HATTON VALENTINE JR. DIES Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - Monday, February 7, 2000 James Hatton Valentine Jr., the fourth-generation owner of Valentine Auction Co. in Richmond, died Friday morning in a local hospital after a long bout with cancer. He was 56. Jimmy Valentine joined the family business in 1973 after serving about seven years in the Army, including a tour as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. At the time, his mother and brother owned the auction house, his father having died in 1970. Valentine Auction Co., founded in 1868, is a general auction house whose specialty is antiques and fine arts. Mr. Valentine's forte was 18th century furniture and furnishings. In 1986, he became the sole operator of Valentine Auction Co. In 1987, Mr. Valentine agreed to surrender the business's auctioneering license for three years and pay a $3,000 fine after the Virginia Auctioneers Board charged the auction house with 10 counts of failing to provide an accounting of proceeds from auctions and failing to pay owners funds received. The member of a family known for strong ties to Richmond, he was born in Richmond. "You know the saying, 'You're very Richmond if .*.*. '? In our family it was if you come back to Richmond to have your children," said his brother, Owen Valentine of Richmond. "My mother came back to Richmond from Savannah, Ga., so Jimmy could be born in Richmond. Dad was in the military [during World War II]." James Valentine graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1963 and attended Virginia Tech where he majored in engineering. His interests included boating and flying. He owned a power boat and held a fixed-wing pilot license. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. Survivors besides his brother include a daughter, Lisa Anne Madera of Cedar Hill, Texas; and a son, James H. Valentine III of Richmond. His memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Ave. Interment will be private.
