More detail on this person: Col. Ralph Herman Vohs Col. Ralph Herman Vohs, 88, of Meadows of Dan, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Laurel Fork. He was born in Argentine, Kan., on March 1, 1919, to Leo Herman Vohs and Hazel Marie Kaniper Vohs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary Ralph Vohs; and a sister, Gloria Irene Shultz. Vohs served four years in the Marine Corps and 29 years with the Army, attaining the rank of colonel. He served in World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. During his service, he was awarded many decorations, medals, and badges, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit Award, Combat Infantry Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After moving to Patrick County, he became a member of the Meadows of Dan Ruritan Club where he received the Tom Downing Award. He served as treasurer of the Meadows of Dan Fire Department and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8467, and volunteered with the Patrick County School System. He was a member of the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Leona M. Vohs of the home; a son, Kim Leo Vohs of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Irene Christiansen of Vancouver, Wash. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Pastor Michael Shockley will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the funeral Saturday.
