More detail on this person: Gerald R. "Jerry" Worthington Obituaries San Antonio Express-News (TX) - Friday, November 3, 2006 LTC Gerald R. "Jerry" Worthington, US Army (Ret.), a decorated Veteran died on November 1, 2006 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was born February 14, 1938 in San Antonio, TX to Ray Hugh & Theodora Haby Worthington, who preceded him in death. Jerry graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Tampa and a Master of Science from Florida Institute of Technology. After eight years with the Texas National Guard, 36th Infantry Division, he joined the Regular Army in 1965. He was commissioned in the Infantry and became an Army Aviator, flying both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, primarily the CH-47 Chinook Helicopter, for twenty-five years. His overseas assignments included Vietnam during 1966-1967 and 1969 where he accrued over 500 combat flying hours. Among his decorations are the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, 19 Air Medals, two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry. After retiring from the Army in 1983 as a Master Army Aviator, he joined United Technology Corp., Sikorsky Aircraft Marketing Division in St. Louis, MO. He retired to Hondo, TX in 1995 where he enjoyed being "on the ranch" loving the outdoors until a stroke and diagnosis of cancer curtailed those activities. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Wanda of San Antonio, TX; son, Todd W. Worthington of Owings, MD and his wife Jo and their children, Stefani of College Park, MD & Christine of the home; daughter, Shelly L. Grimes of Fort Hood, TX and her husband, Bill and their children Katie and Sydney; brother, Curt Worthington and his former wife, Sandy of San Antonio, TX; niece Crista Ward of El Paso, TX and numerous other family members and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Ave. Merritt View 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851-1543 or by visiting www.multiplemyeloma.org. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 5, 2006 at Sunset Funeral Home from 3:00-5:00 PM. A Graveside Service will be held Monday, November 6, 2006 at 9:45 AM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
