More detail on this person: STEVEN L. WHITE Steven L. White, 71, of Edgewater, a retired U. S. Army Major, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at his home. Mr. White was born in Mullens, W. VA and moved to the area in 1951 from his birthplace. In his 20 year Army career, he witnessed the construction of the Berlin Wall and served two tours in Vietnam as an infantryman and aviator with the 1st Infantry Division ("The Big Red 1") and the 1st Calvary Regiment. He also served with the 101st Airborne Division. His awards and decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor device, Combat Infantry Badge, Senior Aviator Badge and Parachutist Badge. He was also the recipient of two Purple Hearts. Following his retirement from the Armed Forces, he began his second career managing various City Public Works departments including the City of Port Orange. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach; Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association and the American Association of Woodturners, St. Paul, MN. His many activities with his children included Boy Scout troop leader, football coach, fishing and camping. He was an avid reader of history and politics and loved to cook and collect coins. Survivors include four sons, John of Arlington, VA, Steven L., Jr. of Castle Rock, CO, David of Edgewater and Monte of Minnetonka, MN; one brother, Jinkie of Ferrum, VA; two sisters, Mary Joe White of New Smyrna Beach and Patti Kerr of Ormond Beach; seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Anne T. White in January, 2012; sister, Linette Brenner; and brother, Michael David White. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 AM Monday, February 20, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach. Burial will follow in the Veterans Field of Honor at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater, with military honors being rendered by members of the American Legion Post #285, Edgewater. Visitation will be from 4 PM until 6 PM with a Wake service at 5:30 PM on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Dudley Funeral Home, New Smyrna Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256. Published in Daytona Beach News-Journal on February 18, 2012
