More detail on this person: Michael Ray (Mike) Weber Memorial services for Michael Ray (Mike) Weber will be held at Temple Bible Church on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Gary DeSalvo officiating. Mr. Weber passed away Monday, December 31, 2012 at the age of 65 following a valiant 21 year battle with cancer. He died peacefully at the VA Hospital in Temple with his family by his side. Mike was born March 17, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Donna Lee and Raymond Earl Weber. He excelled in sports, particularly baseball, throwing two no-hitters for Walled Lake High School from which he graduated in 1965. Shortly after a professional try-out with the New York Yankees, he was drafted by the U. S. Army in 1967. His "attention to detail" led him to be chosen for flight school and become a highly decorated fighter pilot of the Cobra attack helicopter. During his two tours of combat duty in Pleiku, Vietnam, Mike was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Bronze Stars, among numerous other medals for his heroism in combat. Upon returning to the U. S. in 1970, he was stationed at Fort Hood, living in Austin. It was at this time that he met Carlye Pierce who was attending The University of Texas. They fell in love and were married November 27, 1971 in Austin, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. When he left the Army in 1972, he attended The University of Texas, majoring in Architecture. After graduating with honors on the Dean's List, he started his own sporting goods business having been mentored by Joe McBride of McBride's Gun Store, where he worked his way through college in Austin. Mike opened his first store, Central Texas Sporting Goods, in Lampasas in 1976, but soon moved his store to Temple in 1978. In 1983 he built Weber's Gun Store in its present location, and with Carlye's support, he continued to grow and expand the business to what is has today including the shooting range in Troy and Weber's Extreme in the Temple Mall. He went into semi-retirement, December, 2012 following Carlye's retirement from instructing at Temple College that same month. Mike, a loving, caring husband, father and son, supported Carlye in her career as high school teacher, then instructor and Chairman of the Business Management Department at Temple College. His spare time was spent guiding his sons, Todd and Justin in fulfilling their own dreams. He will be lovingly remembered as an amazing husband, father, son, Papaw, brother and friend who would selflessly give of his time and resources to those in need. He loved to tell others about his Savior and His love for us all. Mike has lived in Temple for 30 years and has attended Temple Bible Church for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Reverend Ray Weber. Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Carlye, his two sons, Todd Weber and wife, Holly and Justin Weber, five granddaughters, McKenna, Mallory, Morgan, Macey and Madison all of Temple. Also surviving is his mother, Donna Weber of Ashville, North Carolina and his brother, Jeff Weber and wife, LeighAnn of Greensboro, North Carolina and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Temple Bible Church.
