The body of former Vietnam combat helicopter
pilot. Floyd Weich, 26, of Santa Clara, was
recovered two hours after his craft crashed into
45 feet of water on takeoff from the pier,
witnesses said. Weich. Employed by Astro- copter
Limited of Oakland, had just dropped off an
employee of the Healy-Tibbetts Construction
Company and was taking off when the accident
occurred. Witnesses said they heard the craft hit
the water in the predawn darkness and light fog
about 6:18 a.m. The Coast Guard immediately
dispatched two patrol vessels and a helicopter to
aid in the site found the tangled wreckage of the
helicopter some 200 yards off the pier. The victim
was still strapped in the cockpit. Using a huge
crane installed on the off-shore pier, workers
were able to raise some of the wreckage from the
ocean floor. Weich was a recent graduate of San
Jose state University and had -been flying to the
off-shore A·ig "at least 100 times'' a Coast Guard
spokesman said. There was -no explanation of why
the craft crashed-on takeoff :ROM the .pier. An
official investigation is underway.
