More detail on this person: Colonel Michael J. Weiss, USMCR AGE: 64 o Old Bridge Colonel Michael J. Weiss, USMCR died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 64. Colonel Weiss was beloved by his family and friends. He was born in Astoria, NY in 1947 and was the only son of Cpl. Kenneth Weiss, US Army Air Corps and his wife Florence Kelly. After graduating from the University of Kansas Navy ROTC program in July 1970, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He completed Basic School in March 1971 and Naval Flight Training in April 1972. He was assigned to HMT-204 at MCAS (H) in New River, NC where he was trained to fly the CH-53 Sea Stallion. He served in the Marine Corps from 1971 to 1978. During this time, he served in the 1st Marine Brigade stationed in Honolulu, HI. He was called to join helicopter squadron HMH-463 in April 1975 to conduct humanitarian evacuations of Pnomh Pehn, Cambodia and Saigon, Republic of Vietnam. For his bravery in Cambodia and Vietnam he received the Air Medal with star and the Navy Commendation Medal. After leaving the Marine Corps he returned to the New York area to pursue a civilian career and raise his family. He settled in Old Bridge, NJ in 1978 where he resided for 33 years. His love of the Marine Corps called him back to duty in 1982 as part of US Marine Corps Reserve Heavy Helicopter Squadron HMH-772 in Willow Grove, PA. He assumed command of HMH-772 in 1988 and retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1996. During his 33 years in Old Bridge, Colonel Weiss was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church and a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus of the St. Thomas Council #4815. He volunteered much of his time to the Old Bridge Little League where he was past president and coach and spent many weekends playing golf at Tamarack Golf Course and Glenwood Country Club. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, son, and grandfather and a passionate fan of the University of Kansas basketball team. The past eight years he loved to spend time with his three granddaughters. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Maria Valenza Weiss; two sons, Christian Weiss and his wife Jennifer of Chatham and Carl Weiss of Sayreville; a sister Stephanie Maxwell and her husband David of Florida; and, three granddaughters: Grace (8), Carly (6), and Cate (4) A wake will be held at Brunswick Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 5 from 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM. For directions please visit www.brunswickmemorialhome.com. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 9:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Old Bridge. Colonel Weiss will be interred with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.
