More detail on this person: Lt. Col. John P. Westphal Lt. Col. John P. Westphal, 80, died Friday, July 7, 2000, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Milbank, S.D., to Gustav Westphal and Annie Dressen Westphal. He entered the U.S. Army at Fort Douglas, Utah, on Dec. 3, 1941, and remained on active duty until his discharge Sept. 30, 1968. While in the service, he served in World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. He was an aviation staff officer and was the recipient of the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, Aviation Badge and numerous other citations and commendations. After retirement, he was involved with aviation for several years in Tupelo. He was a protestant, a life member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars and Korean War Veteran. Graveside services will be in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery with full military honors. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Idora Westphal of Tupelo; one daughter, Twyla L. Galbreath of Montgomery, Ala.; two sons, John P. Westphal II of Palmbay, Fla., and Gregory Alan Westphal of Tupelo; five sisters, Louise J. Martinson of Banning, Calif., Lizzetta "Sis" Buchele, of Milbank, S.D., Esther "Budgie" Mueller of Watertown, S.D., Anna L. "Honey" Hansen of Beaver, Ore., and Emma J. Willet of Niles, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Duncan C. Galbreath, Sherry Gwen Galbreath, John P. Westphal III, Gregory Alan Westphal, Joseph Dale Westphal, Lee Jennings Westphal and Luke Martinson Westphal; seven stepchildren and seven stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherry Gwendolyn Westphal; five brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars Monument Fund.
