More detail on this person: Lt. Col. LEON HOWARD WIGGINS Lt. Col. LEON HOWARD WIGGINS, 84, of Old Town passed away Friday, July 29, 2011, at North Florida Regional Hospital. Ltc. Wiggins was born in Shamrock to Fletcher and Corine Wiggins. He was a lifetime resident in Dixie County except for the time he served in the United States Army and a short period of time when he lived in Jacksonville and Crystal River. He enlisted in the service in 1948, serving in WWII in Korea. In Vietnam he served as an aviator of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. He was the founding Commanding Officer of the 129th Attack Helicopter Company in Vietnam and Commander of Advanced Fixed Wing Training at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. He was a Master Mason, member of the Chiefland VFW Post 5625, American Legion Post 383 in Old Town, Suwannee River Cruisers, Moose Lodge 325 of Fanning Springs, Fraternal Order of Eagles, AmVet Post 422, Army Otter Caribou Association and the Old Town United Methodist Church. Mr. Wiggins enjoyed fishing, golf, roaming around Dixie County and exploring the woods, photographing them with his two favorite sites being the Dixie Main Line and the Suwannee River. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Agee Wiggins, brothers, William F. Wiggins and Winston D. Wiggins and sister Virginia Lucille Lowe. He is survived by his sons, William L. Wiggins of Old Town and Jeff A. Wiggins of Jacksonville; brothers, James Dennis Wiggins of Johnsonville, South Carolina and Charles R. Wiggins of Citranelle; sisters, Betty Sue Meeks of Ocoee, and Ann Muga of Gainesville; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Ranier officiating. An Army Honor Guard military interment followed at Cross City Cemetery. A visitation was held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made to the Old Town United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 637, Old Town, Florida, 32680. Arrangements have been placed under the care of the Rick Gooding Funeral Home in Cross City.
