More detail on this person: Ray Whitby was stationed in Germany at the time of his death. After his duty at Fort Ord he went to the Transportation Officer Advanced Course enroute to Germany.

I do not think that he served in Viet Nam.

His widow, Janet Bates, lives in Murtle Beach, S.C.

From: John(ny) J. Shelton From The 1970 Sphinx (No obituary available): Raymond F. Whitby, III, origionally from Batesburg, SC, was a Business Administration major. He was a "K" Company corporal, SSgt, and 1Lt. He was on the Sphinx staff his junior and senior year, the Wesley Foundation, Gymnastics Club, Sigma Delta Psi all four years, and the Rod and Gun Club. After graduating, he went into the US Army and was a Captain when he passed away in Washington, DC, on January 28, 1979. The Citadel's Raymond F. Whitby Scholarship is in his memory.
