More detail on this person: Wallace Eric Young, 60 Wallace Young, cancer educator Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - Thursday, June 14, 2007 WALLACE E. YOUNG worried about the youth of Philadelphia. But instead of just worrying, Wallace undertook to help young people in many ways: coaching them in track and football at the Oak Lane Youth Association, acting as mentor and role model, teaching them religion at his church and hosting at least a dozen youngsters in his home at one time, for a weekend or longer. "He was a loving, warm-hearted man who wanted to take care of people," said his son, Eric Young. "His grandchildren and all their friends called him 'Pop-Pop.' " Wallace Young, director of materials management and community outreach for the Fox Chase Cancer Center, which he served for 23 years, a seven-year Army veteran, teacher, coach and civic leader, died Saturday of a brain aneurysm. He was 60 and lived in Wyncote, but had lived many years in North Philadelphia and West Oak Lane. One of Wallace's goals in the cancer center's outreach program was to educate people, especially African-Americans, on the dangers of cancer and how to prevent it. He took his message to black churches, recreation centers and civic organizations and held seminars on the importance of health checkups and screening, with special emphasis on prostate and breast cancer. "He was a professional and dedicated worker, always striving for quality and excellence," his family said. "He had a special connection with people. It didn't matter the age. He always took time to listen and lend a hand." Wallace was born in Dillon, S.C., to the Rev. John W. Young and A. Virginia Peake-Young. He was raised and got his early education in Spartanburg, S.C. He came to Philadelphia at an early age and graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School. He received a bachelor's degree in business operations management from La Salle University and was studying at Arcadia University for a certificate in public health when his own health began to fail. He was baptized at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Spartanburg, and in 1973 joined Southern Baptist Church, 5th and Venango streets, North Philadelphia, where he was a deacon and Bible-study teacher. "He taught me and my brother to always have a plan," Eric said. "Always have a purpose and provide your own solutions. Don't rely on others. "You know how you want to do better than your parents. Well, his mark is so high it's going to be difficult to follow him." Wallace served seven years in the Army and emerged in 1971 as a warrant officer. He married his high school sweetheart, Efelda "Pat" Young. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and served on many professional and community boards, including the Cheltenham High School Board. "He was a wonderful husband and father," his family said, "insuring that his family was well taken care of at all times." Besides his wife and son, he is survived by another son, Keith M. Young; two sisters, Dorothea Johnson and Bridgette Williford; a brother, the Rev. Johnny B. Miller; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Clinton Kenneth Young. Services: 10 a.m. tomorrow at Triumph Baptist Church, 1649 Hunting Park Ave. Friends may call at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Woolston Avenue and Easton Road. *
