Additional information about this casualty:
Bodies were found undistrubed approximately eight months later. In a letter to Pannell's parents from Major James W. Hanks dated 6 Feb. 1970 he states, " Information reveals that Randy was killed by a blast wound that affected the whole body and death was immediate."

Following is a quote from a telegram to my parents, "Since the aircraft your son was piloting was operating over enemy controlled territory at the time of the incident and still is under control of hostile forces, the death of your son has been determined to be a result of hostile action." Randy was providing gunship cover for a lightweight observation aircraft on a low level reconnaissance mission according to the reports we received when they were shot down. From: Shirlene Juno
