From the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 161 (HMM-161) Command Chronology for August 1966: August 8, 1966 - In support of Operation Prairie squadron aircraft carried 185 passengers, 2 Medevacs and 1200 pounds of cargo. At approximately 1830 hours, (helicopter) YR-22, involved in an emergency ammunition resupply, received automatic and small arms fire. One .51 caliber round passed through the cabin, wounding two passengers and killing the gunner CPL Ronald L. Belknap. The other aircraft in the flight received hits but sustained no casualties.
