War Story:
The VHPA believes this was the 15th Med aircraft involved in the following action. The award narrative for CPT Fred D. McKellar states he was AC of a medical evacuation helicopter supporting combat operations near Bong Son. As the aircraft was about to land, it received intense automatic weapons fire, wounding CPT McKellar, the pilot (CPT Kurt Kuhns) and the crewchief (SP4 Trogden). CPT Kuhns had to take control of the Huey because CPT McKellar's arm was shattered and he was bleeding profusely. CPT Kuhns had only been in country two weeks at this time. CPT McKellar directed treatment of SP4 Trogden and told CPT Kuhns where to fly. The aircraft had received over 30 hits. A few hours after they landed, SP4 Trogden died of injuries.
