War Story:
HMM-265 was to become the ships squadron at mid month (16 June). HMM-164 (the SLF "B" Squadron) was due to leave the Valley Forge. The HMM-265 Squadron Executive Officer, Maj Richard L. Yanke (corrected spelling), was the pilot. The Sgt Major was on board technically as the gunner, but actually they were on a liason mission with the ship and HMM-164 for eventual takeover of the SLF "B" mission. Not sure why Cpl Reed was on board, but that may have been for skins. The SgtMaj was aboard for liaison, not for skins. Major Yanke later became the Squadron Commander of HMM-265 at Marble Mountain when the Det went aboard the SLF on 16 June. Maj Yanke joined the squadron aboard the Valley Forge with the remainder of the squadron on 7 July. Source "US MARINES IN VIETNAM - 1968 - Command and Staff List.
