In July and August of 1968, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 161 (HMM-161) was participating in Operation Lancaster II, a 3rd Marine Division operation of multi-battalion search-and-clear maneuvers in the Ca Lu area. Almost every day the squadron missions included inserting and extracting reconnaissance teams. Frequently this had to be done under heavy enemy fire. On August 22nd, while trying to insert a reconnaissance team, CPL Kenneth N. Brandes, a crew chief aboard a CH-46, was killed and two other crewmen were wounded. [Taken from archive.org]
