War Story:
Eric was the crew chief, not a passenger(pax). Per Hugh Mills book, Low Level Hell. The ship was lead in a flight of 4. AC was "Darkhorse 26" Morgan Roseborough, PP was Bob Holmes, and the gunner was Danny Free. The mine went off as they were setting down in the LZ with a load of ARPs for insertion. Hope this will help you clear up some of the small details you are looking for. Keep in mind this is from memory and we are talking about somthing that took place a long time ago. I do feel as though I can speak with some authority on that day as it had the biggest impact on my life to this day. The lead ship was Darkhorse 26 and I was the crew chief. My ship was 67-18576. Eric was crew chief on the second ship in the formation. As for who was flying gunner on both ships that day I cannot remember. The Army should have Eric listed as a crew chief and his death should be as in helo. Going into the L Z we were hit by RPGs. On final approch, the impact took both Eric's and my choppers down. Email if I can be of further help. I do have some pictures if you are interested. Danny "Grit" Free
