War Story:
Crashed on take-off from the III MAF helipad 3 km northwest of Marble Mountain Air Field. A power loss on take-off followed by a rotor strike on a concrete telephone pole and a catastrophic crash. The summary says there were 5 fatalities, 7 serious injuries, 7 minor injuries, and 10 no-injuries - 29 people in all. Four of the KIAs were Korean Marines. A Pacific Stars and Stripes article on 13 January 1970 stated one USMC crew man and four Korean Marines were killed and three U.S. crewmen and 18 Korean Marines were injured. The article also said the CH-46 burned as a result of the crash.
