Accident Summary:

This major aircraft accident involved a UH-1H being used to transport passengers in the Republic of Vietnam. After the aircraft picked up an unknown number of passengers, estimates being that a total of 11 or 12 persons were aboard, made a low level takeoff downwind followed by a low level turn to the left. At a distance of approximately 600 feet from its takeoff point, the left skid and main rotor blades of the helicopter struck the ground and the aircraft momentarily became airborne again until it finally came to rest on its left side 300 feet beyond the initial touch down point. The aircraft was totally destroyed by post crash fire. It is estimated that 6 of the personnel aboard the aircraft when the accident occurred sustained fatal injuries.
