ACFT ON APP TO FLD SITE TO PICK UP WOUNDED PERS DESCENT MADE TO FLASHLITES ON GROUND APPROACH WAS TOO LOW STRUCK TREES AND CRASHED 1000 METERS SHORT OF INTENDED LANDING SPOT


War Story:
From 173rd Abn Bde AAR Op TOLEDO p17 for 12 August 1966: "At 2030 hours a dustoff helicopter crashed approximately 800 meters northeast of Position Grenada, killing the two pilots and injuring two. The wreckage was secured by elements of the 2/503d Inf."

Position Grenada was XS813965, so approximate UTM for helo YS819971 in Long Khanh Province, approx 9 KM NW of Nui Be Mountain (Hill 874).

Note statement that incident occurred 2030 on 12 Aug, not 13 Aug as carried in TAGCEN and CACCF. Operation TOLEDO was conducted right where Phuoc Tuy, Long Khanh, and Binh Thuy Provinces join. From: Ken Davis
