For date 640203
121 AVN was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
South Vietnam
Location, Long Khanh
Description: The 121st AVN reported two CH-21's left Soc Trang to resupply an ARVN unit that had fallen under ambush near Long Khanh. Nearing the ambush site, the aircraft received heavy ground fire, and one took a hit in the forward transmission. Losing oil pressure, the aircraft was forced to land. The remaining ship, after determining that the condition of the downed crew and the tactical situation at the landing site were satisfactory, continued on the mission. After arriving at the ambush site, they traded badly needed ammunition for 13 wounded, including one American advisor. The ship returned to the crippled aircraft and picked up the downed crew. Carrying both loads, the aircraft returned to Soc Trang successfully.
