Location, Nam Dong
Description: A-726 SF Det with 381 CIDG, 50 Nung, 7 LLDB, 12 SF, 1 Australian garrisoned the camp where the Nung guards were on full alert because of an internal camp disturbance. The VC battalion attacked at 0230H achieved complete surprise. This camp had a second, inner, perimeter that had been part of a French fort. CPT Roger Donlon would win the first Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in leading the defense. The USMC dispatched six helicopters to carry an SF and Nung reaction force but they were unable to land until 0945H. By then the VC force were withdrawing. The losses were KIA: 58 CIDG, 2 SF, 1 Austrilain; WIA: 57 CIDG, and 7 SF. The VC body count was 55.
