Description: At 0800, the first was of 19 CH-46s from MAG-16 land the first elements of the 4th Marines into LZ Raven which was near Route 597 and about 7 miles north of Phong Dien. This battalion moved some 2,000 meters southeast and made contact near the hamlet of Ap Chinh An which was also the battle ground during operation OREGON. At 1100, MAG-16 inserted a second battalion into LZ Shrike which was about 9,000 meters southeast of LZ Raven, also on Route 597. This battalion moved against Ap Chinh An from opposite direction. This force met strong enemy resistance from the village of My Phu. HMM-161 had a helicopter shot down about 1,000 meters south of My Phu and the Marine battalion also rescued this crew. The battle continued into the night with Marine artillery and air plus naval gun fire from DD 957 DAVIS supporting the infantry.
