Operation JAY
South Vietnam
Description: About 0830, a Vietnamese Marine Corps 28 truck convoy was ambushed by the 802d VC Battalion on Route 1 just northeast of Phong Dien. The Vietnamese would suffer 42 KIAs including the battalion co and 95 WIA. The VC had divided their force into two groups for the ambush. One group was able to escape into some woods after American artillery and aircraft responded to cries for help from the USMC advisors. The other group had to cross a wide open area to make its escape and it they would not make it. The allies killed 185 and captured nine prisoners. They also recoved 39 individual and eight crew-served weapons. This is the last major action in the operation JAY area.
