Operation ATTLEBORO
South Vietnam
Description: This operation was initiated by the 196th Light Inf Bde in War Zone C (Tay Ninh Province). After several weeks with no significant contact, the operation encounters the VC 9th Div and the NVA 101st Regt deploying to attack the Special Forces camp at Sui Da. The ensuing battles, beginning in late October, developed into the largest U.S. operation to date. It involved the 1st Inf Div, the 3rd Bde, 4th Inf Div, the 173rd Abn Bde, the 11th ACR, and several ARVN bns. The allies claimed 1,106 known enemy casualties and large quantities of enemy weapons and ammo. This operation was the field test of a new search and destroy pattern of area warfare; multidivisional corps level operations. http://mywar.homestead.com/Phase1.html
