Operation ATTLEBORO
South Vietnam
Description: As part of ATTLEBORO, the 1/27th Inf, 25th Inf Div was engaged in a grisly, sustained battle for survival. By the afternoon, the Bn CO was wounded and A Co fought for its positions against three major frontal assaults. The Bn CO of 2/27th was killed leading an attempt to link up the two battalions. One of its companies was isolated and surrounded by the VC. When medevac helicopters descended into lines after dark and flicked on landing lights, an immediate mortar attack resulted. For the rest of that night they came in blind and landed to flashlights.
