Description: The official USMC history states that Prairie IV started as a two-regiment search and destroy operation covering the same area of Prairie III. This was part of the 3d Marine Div's movement of more combat units north into I Corps. The 9th Marines was operating from Dong Ha and the 3d Marines from Camp Carroll. The concept of employment placed the 3d Bn 3d Marines and the 3d Bn 9th Marines in the northwest portion of the AO. The 9th Marines, using the 1st Bn 4th Marines and 1st Bn 9th Marines, was to cover the vital piedmont area in and around Quang Tri City. The boundary between the two regiments was just west of the Cam Lo-Con Thien axis.
