Description: As part of GREELEY, A/2/503d Inf, 173d ABN Bde made contact with 6 Bn, 24th NVA Regt as they moved down a ridge line in triple-canopy jungle from their DNP toward the Brigade CP at Dak To. Artillery fires and helicopter gunships supported but could not halt the NVA assault which quickly consummed two platoons. A Co moved back up the ridge and began clearing an LZ. B Co air assaulted into a near by LZ but was shot up as they tried to leave the clearing. C Co, moving on the ground, linked up with the remenant of A Co in mid-afternoon. The Battle of Dak To had begun and it would be one of the most violent of the war. There would be two phases associated with the Battle of Dak To. The first phase lasted until August when the action was relatively light until early November when the second and most violent phase began.
