Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Captain Leads Assault on 21st NVA Positions" dated 27 Jan 1968. CPT Rammon E. Millard Jr. received the Silver Star here recently for gallantry in action on Oct. 27, 1967. Millard, a company commander of B/2/327th Inf, with the 1st Bde, 101st Abn Div, was cited for gallantry while leading his company during a six-hour battle with an entrenched company of the 21st NVA Regiment during Operation Wheeler/Wallow west of Chu Lai. The paratrooper company conducted an airmobile assault in to a suspected enemy position. Immediately after landing, the Americans were taken under heavy automatic weapons fire. With Millard personally encouraging his troops and exposing himself to enemy fire, the paratroopers advanced through the deadly fire. Millard adjusted helicopter gunship and artillery fire on the enemy positions. He also directed strikes by Air Force jets within 50 years of his own positions. As night fell the paratrooper commander directed Air Force Dragon Ships which dropped flares and machine-gunned the enemy positions.
